Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown shares warning after contract extension

Anybody assuming that Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is satisfied now that he's received a massive contract extension had better think again. 

"I’ve gotta go harder," St. Brown said while speaking at a community event on Thursday afternoon, as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "I told everyone, I’m going harder now. I’m not changing. My goal – our goal – is that Lombardi [Trophy]. We need it. We feel like we can do it. So, that’s our goal going into the season – we want that trophy."

St. Brown has made it known on multiple occasions over the past few years that he remains motivated by the fact that 16 receivers were drafted ahead of him in the spring of 2021. History suggests his mindset won't change even after agreeing to a four-year extension with the Lions that, per Eric Woodyard of ESPN, includes $77M in guaranteed money and could be worth up to $120M.

"But I’m not changing," St. Brown continued. "Everyone knows that – or I hope they do, or they’ll find out. I’m just glad I’m here for four more years, whatever it is. To be with the guys, the coaches, the teammates, the fans – everyone that’s a part of the organization is… I hear a lot of stories about other teams and whatnot, but this is all I know and they’ve been awesome to me so far." 

According to ESPN stats, St. Brown finished the 2023 regular season tied for second in the entire league with 119 total receptions, fifth with 164 targets, third with 1,515 receiving yards and tied for fourth with 10 touchdown receptions. St. Brown left little doubt on Thursday that he's happy to be staying put for the foreseeable future. 

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," St. Brown explained as relayed by Justin Rogers of The Detroit News. "Giving back to this city is something I want to do a lot more. I'm so busy, I feel sometimes, during the season. I get caught up with stuff, but definitely moving forward, going to do more stuff like this. I've done stuff in the past, but getting more into the city to be around people like this, people who have been in Detroit, who have stuck with us. These are the best fans in the world. This is the best."

As of late Thursday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Lions tied for fourth among the betting favorites (+1200 odds) to win Super Bowl LIX in February 2025. St. Brown hopes to be a big reason Detroit becomes the overall betting favorite by some point in January.
