Steelers’ Calvin Austin III Predicts He Will Have A Memorable 2024 Season: 'I Have A Plan'
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers made an exciting move by selecting Calvin Austin III, a promising and speedy wide receiver hailing from Memphis. Despite being chosen in the fourth round, 138th overall, there was considerable excitement surrounding his potential impact on the team.

However, fate dealt a challenging hand when Austin encountered a significant setback in the form of a foot injury. This injury sidelined him for the entirety of his rookie season, effectively delaying his debut in the NFL until the 2023 season. Despite this setback, both the Steelers organization and fans maintained high hopes for Austin's eventual return to the field, eager to witness the skills and athleticism that initially caught their attention during the draft process.

Austin’s return to the gridiron was eagerly anticipated by fans. However, his performance on the field during his second season was marked by modest statistics. Despite his undeniable talent, Austin's impact was limited to just 17 receptions, accumulating a total of 180 receiving yards throughout the season. His lone receiving touchdown showcased flashes of brilliance, but it was his additional rushing touchdown that hinted at his versatility as a playmaker.

Steelers' Calvin Austin III Is Expecting A More Productive 2024 Season

Austin recently sat down with Teresa Varley of Steelers.com to reflect on his journey during the past season and discuss his aspirations for the upcoming offseason. Despite facing challenges on the field, Austin's optimism shines through as he shares his plans for improvement and growth. With a determined spirit, he expresses confidence in his ability to make a more significant impact during the 2024 campaign.

"It excites me this offseason. I have a plan and know I want to come back different. I want to be counted on as a guy. That is where my mindset is. I know the things I need to do, the changes I need to make. Especially after playing a season. I have it all lined up and I think I will be able to reach those goals.”

Despite being targeted a relatively low 30 times throughout the season, Austin remains resolute in his determination to elevate his game during the offseason.

"I want to get my body back right, my route focus and detail focus. Watching and then playing, I have two different aspects of looking at things. Going into this third year, I know what I need as far as my route detail. I used to say I will work on everything, but now it's specific things that you need to focus on and clean up to steadily improve your game. I would say route detail and overall body composition is my focus."

With an unwavering commitment to improvement, he eagerly anticipates the upcoming offseason as an opportunity to refine his skills, enhance his understanding of the game, and strengthen his connection with the Steelers' offensive system.

The Steelers are gearing up for an exciting year ahead, especially when it comes to their talented wide receiver group. Fans are buzzing with anticipation about how the team plans to unleash the skills of players like Austin, Diontae Johnson and George Pickens on the field. And let's not forget about the other guy, Pat Freiermuth, who's been a great receiving tight end when used correctly.

With the appointment of Arthur Smith as the new offensive coordinator, there's a real sense of curiosity about the fresh strategies he'll bring to the table in 2024. Steeler Nation is eager to see how Smith's approach will shape the team's offensive style and performance.

After a challenging 2023 season, where the offense struggled to find its groove, there's a collective hope that the arrival of new coaching talent will spark a turnaround. Fans are optimistic about the potential for a revamped and more dynamic offensive game plan under Smith's leadership. It's a time of anticipation and excitement as everyone eagerly awaits the unveiling of the Steelers' new offensive identity. Austin hopes to be a massive part of the new offense.
